Kayak Rentals are a great option for families and groups that already have some paddling experience or who are looking for an activity that fits their skills, schedule and budget. Boat rentals give you the freedom to enjoy the paddling destination of your choice! You can continue to refine your boating skills and share the experience with your family and friends. Our rental staff can recommend local paddling opportunities that match your skill level.
What to Wear on the Water
We recommend that all paddlers wear wicking/quick-drying clothes (check the labels for synthetic materials such as polypropylene, spandex and nylon)
- Shorts, or pants that can easily roll up to the knee
- Short or long sleeved shirt
- Fleece top (should be a good fit)
- Lightweight windbreaker/rain jacket
- Sandals (that strap on!) or shoes that WILL GET WET
- Sun hat/visor, chapstick, sunscreen, and a compact waterproof digital camera are also recommended!
Bikes are a great way to explore Lopez Island! Bus and taxi services are basically non-existent on the Island, but renting a bike will allow you to quickly travel and explore the many sights of Lopez. It is relatively flat with rolling hills (and a few more challenging ones!) and most of the island can be explored in a weekend. The locals are accustomed to bike traffic – and have provided pullouts and signage to keep traffic flowing smoothly.
Be sure to pick up a Lopez Map (available at the ferry landing, at our rental booth, and from the Chamber of Commerce in the Village) for lots of helpful sightseeing info. You can also view/download the Map from the Lopez Island Chamber of Commerce website. Traveling by bike also allows you to avoid lengthy wait times in the ferry lines. Walk-on/bike passengers can arrive 15-20 minutes before the boat loads, while visitors with vehicles are cautioned to arrive at least 60 minutes early, and still risk not getting on!
Where to Find Us
To rent equipment from this location, please visit our Rental Shed on the beach at Spencer Spit State Park, Lopez Island. We are located at the base of the main trail, and adjacent to the boat load/unload area. Follow our signs to the beach!
Kayak and Bike Rentals are available from our rental booth at Spencer Spit State Park on Lopez Island from May through Labor Day weekend in September, weather conditions permitting (May and September are weekends-only).
Depending on where you choose to paddle, you may need to be able to load the boat onto your car’s roof rack system. Our Lopez Island location at Spencer Spit State Park offers direct beach access which eliminates the need to transport the boats – you can simply launch from the rental location.
If you choose to transport the boat, you must have an adequate roof rack (or trailer) with paddling and straps, and be able to safely load and unload the boats. You will be responsible for loading the boats and tying them down, and must agree to take responsibility for any damage that may occur to your vehicle or the equipment.
Sure! We recommend that you paddle a double or triple – for added stability and momentum! You will want to let our rental staff know that you do not have any experience so that they can assist you in selecting appropriate equipment and a place to paddle. We have beginners renting kayaks nearly every day.
Yes. With enough advance notice, we can usually outfit you with the boats and equipment that you will need for an overnight or extended adventure. We also have a limited number of first come, first served equipment available for last-minute trips.
