Lopez Island Kayak, SUP and Bike Rentals

Kayak, Bike & SUP Rentals on Lopez Island

Kayak, Bike and SUP rentals are available on the beach at Spencer Spit State Park.

We currently offer the following equipment for rent through our concession at Spencer Spit State Park;

  • Sea Kayaks (Northwest Kayaks Fiberglass Touring Kayaks – single, double, triple and rec boats). Rental includes boat, paddles (1 per person + 1 spare per group), life jackets, spray skirts, bilge pump
  • Bikes (Mountain Bikes). Rental includes bike, helmet, lock and map of the island
  • SUP Boards (fiberglass and inflatable boards are available). Rental includes board, leash, paddle and pfd

Kayak Rentals are a great option for families and groups that already have some paddling experience or who are looking for an activity that fits their skills, schedule and budget. Boat rentals give you the freedom to enjoy the paddling destination of your choice! You can continue to refine your boating skills and share the experience with your family and friends. Our rental staff can recommend local paddling opportunities that match your skill level. Recommended for ages 8+ with a ratio of 2 adults per child.

What to Wear on the Water

We recommend that all paddlers wear wicking/quick-drying clothes (check the labels for synthetic materials such as polypropylene, spandex and nylon)

  • Shorts, or pants that can easily roll up to the knee
  • Short or long sleeved shirt
  • Fleece top (should be a good fit)
  • Lightweight windbreaker/rain jacket
  • Sandals (that strap on!) or shoes that WILL GET WET
  • Sun hat/visor, chapstick, sunscreen, and a compact waterproof digital camera are also recommended!

Bikes are a great way to explore Lopez Island! Shuttle and rideshare options are very limited on the Island, but renting a bike will allow you to quickly travel and explore the many sights of Lopez. The island is relatively flat with rolling hills (and a few challenging ones!) and most of the island can be explored in a weekend. The locals are accustomed to bike traffic – and have provided pullouts and signage to keep traffic flowing smoothly.

Be sure to pick up a copy of the Lopez Map (available at the ferry landing, at our rental booth, and from the Chamber of Commerce in the Village) for lots of helpful sightseeing info. You can also view/download the Map from the Lopez Island Chamber of Commerce website. Traveling by bike also allows you to avoid lengthy wait times in the ferry lines. Walk-on/bike passengers can arrive 15-20 minutes before the boat loads, while visitors with vehicles are cautioned to arrive at least 60-90 minutes early, and still run the risk of not getting on!

You can also take bikes and walk on the ferry as a foot passenger to explore other islands throughout the San Juan Islands. A popular day trip is to ride your bike from Spencer Spit State Park to the Lopez Ferry landing, take the ferry to Friday Harbor for a day of riding and shopping, then take the afternoon ferry back to Lopez. Ask the Outdoor Adventure staff for additional bike ride options.
