Trip Leader Assessments


The American Canoe Association (ACA) has developed assessments for adult padders who lead kayak trips and tours. They are ideal for clubs, camps, and scout groups who need to complete a formal assessment prior to leading introductory kayak tours.

Coastal Kayaking Day Trip Leader Assessment*

Convenient paddling skills check course developed by the ACA for adult paddlers with basic kayaking skills. This assessment is intended for paddlers who will be leading DAY TRIPS in gentle conditions. Conditions encountered during these day trips would be; wind less than 10 knots, waves less than 1 foot, and currents less than 2 knots. The focus of the assessment course is trip leading, safety education, and rescue. Requires completion of a written examination

Coastal Kayak Skills Assesment*

This kayaking assessment is designed for those who need documentation of their paddling skill level. It is not an instructor certification, but is intended to show proficiency in kayak skills, often required of camp staff, lifeguards, and recreation employees. 4 levels are available depending on the requirements of your employer.

River Kayak Day Trip Leading Assessment*

Designed for adult padders with basic paddling skills who will be leading beginning kayakers on day trips. The emphasis of this course is trip leading, safety education, and rescue and requires a written examination. 5 levels are available.

Level 1 Introduction to Kayaking (not specific to whitewater)
Level 2 Essentials of River Kayaking
Level 3 River Kayaking

Level 4 Whitewater Kayaking
Level 5 Advanced Whitewater Kayaking

*Trip Leaders who will be providing paddling instruction or who will be teaching kayak skills should complete an instructor course instead of an Assessment course.
